Danlí lies in the El Paraíso department of south-eastern Honduras, in a highland valley not far from the Nicaraguan border. From above, the town follows the Spanish colonial pattern: a regular grid of blocks around a central plaza and church. Beyond the grid, the streets loosen into more irregular neighbourhoods, and the hills and farmland of the valley surround them.
The town is closely tied to tobacco. The surrounding valleys produce leaf for many well-known cigar brands, and cigar factories are an important employer. Danlí also hosts the Festival Nacional del Maíz, a large annual corn festival that draws visitors from across the country.
