Embalse lies in the Calamuchita Valley of Córdoba Province, on the shore of the Embalse Río Tercero reservoir. The town takes its name, which simply means reservoir, from that body of water. On a map, the large irregular lake dominates the scene, with inlets and bays reaching into the surrounding hills.
The town is known for two very different landmarks. One is its holiday complex, a large, planned tourist resort built in the mid-twentieth century on the lakeshore. The other is the Embalse nuclear power station, which also sits by the reservoir. Residential streets gather between the shoreline and the rising ground.
