Ferndale is a community in northern Anne Arundel County, Maryland, south of Baltimore and next to Glen Burnie. On a map, its most noticeable neighbour is Baltimore/Washington International Airport, whose runways and terminals fill a large area to the west. Residential streets fill the land between the airport, the main highways and the rail corridor.
The Baltimore light rail line runs through the area and has a stop in Ferndale, giving the community a direct link to the city. From above, the pattern is a mix of older, fairly regular suburban blocks and later curving streets, cut through by the straight lines of highways and rails. The result is dense and full of contrast.
