Francavilla al Mare lies on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, just south of Pescara, where the continuous built-up coastline begins to thin out. It has long been a seaside town for summers and weekends. Around 1900 it drew the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, whose converted convent became a meeting place for Gabriele D'Annunzio and other artists.
The shoreline organises the map. A long, almost straight beach runs along one edge, backed by a promenade, the coastal railway and a shallow grid of streets packed between the rails and the road. Inland the ground rises, and the older quarter of the town sits on the hill above. Its lanes turn and climb, while the grid below stays flat and regular.
