Gardena lies in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, on the flat coastal plain between downtown Los Angeles and the harbour. Its map is a close, regular grid of residential blocks crossed by wide boulevards, with the Harbor Freeway along its eastern side and other freeways close by. There are few natural features to interrupt the pattern, which gives the city a particularly even texture.
The city has long had a strong Japanese American community, reflected in its restaurants, markets and cultural institutions. Gardena was also known for decades for its licensed card clubs, which made it a destination for poker players well before the game became mainstream. The name is often linked to the farms and gardens that once covered this land.
