Gereshk lies on the Helmand River in southern Afghanistan, at the point where the main highway between Kandahar and Herat crosses the valley. On a map, the town is built close to the river, and its streets spread out from the road and bridge. The difference between the green, irrigated valley and the bare desert beyond is the main thing that shapes the place.
Water defines the land around the town. Irrigation canals branch off from the Helmand and carry water into fields and orchards, drawing long lines across an otherwise arid plain. Farm plots and small settlements line these channels, and beyond them the land is almost empty. The layout looks less like a single city and more like an oasis stretched along its water sources.
