Gescher is a small town in the Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, in western Germany near the Dutch border. The landscape around it is classic Münsterland: flat to gently rolling, divided into fields and pastures, with scattered farmsteads, hedgerows and patches of woodland. The Berkel, a small river, flows through the town and continues west toward the Netherlands.
Gescher is known as the Glockenstadt, the bell town. Church bells have been cast here for a very long time, and the town is home to a museum dedicated to bells. That tradition fits the town's measured scale. Its old centre around the church is compact, and residential streets extend outward in loops and cul-de-sacs typical of post-war German planning.
