From above, it is not one continuous urban mass but a patchwork of compact residential areas separated by forests, fields and small stream valleys. Motorways and railway lines cross the map in strong diagonals and link it to its larger neighbours.
The town calls itself a Gartenstadt, or garden city, after the green space that surrounds and runs between its districts.
