Haar lies just beyond the eastern edge of Munich, on the broad, level gravel plain that stretches away from the city. It is closely tied to the Bavarian capital by road and by the S-Bahn, and on a map its streets merge almost seamlessly with the outer districts of Munich to the west, while open land opens up to the east.
For more than a century Haar has been home to a large psychiatric hospital, founded in the early twentieth century and now part of the Isar-Amper-Klinikum. Its extensive grounds form a distinct campus of pavilions, paths and trees, and part of the former hospital site has been redeveloped as a new residential quarter.
