Ḩalfāyā lies in Hama Governorate in western Syria, on the agricultural plain north of the city of Hama. The town is compact. Its denser core of streets loosens toward the edges into wider roads and newer blocks, and from above the built area stands out clearly against the fields that surround it on every side.
This is one of the country's farming regions, watered by the Orontes and its irrigation schemes, and the land is divided into long fields crossed by rural roads. The town of Mhardeh lies only a few kilometres away, and a wider frame shows a network of settlements linked across the plain, each a small cluster of streets in open country.
