Hartbeespoort grew around the Hartbeespoort Dam, which was built in the early twentieth century on the Crocodile River in South Africa's North West Province, west of Pretoria. The lake dominates the map. Its shoreline is long and intricate, with bays and inlets reaching into the surrounding land, and it is ringed by homes, marinas and holiday estates.
To the north and west, the Magaliesberg range runs as a long, continuous ridge, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. A cableway carries visitors up to the ridge for views over the water. The dam wall itself, with its arched road crossing, is a key feature where the Crocodile River leaves the lake.
