Klin lies in Moscow Oblast about 85 kilometres north-west of the capital, on the Sestra River. From above, the river winds through the town in a series of bends, and the old centre sits on higher ground beside it. The Leningradskoye highway and the Moscow–St Petersburg railway pass through the area, drawing long lines past the older, more irregular streets.
Klin is first recorded in the fourteenth century, and for centuries it was a stop on the road between Moscow and Tver, later extended to St Petersburg. Pyotr Tchaikovsky spent his last years here, and his house, where he wrote the Sixth Symphony, is now a museum. The town is also known for its glass Christmas decorations, which have been made here for many decades.
