Komae is a city in western Tokyo Metropolis and one of the smallest municipalities in Japan by area. It lies on the north bank of the Tama River, facing Kawasaki across the water, and is almost entirely residential. On a map, the city boundary encloses a dense patchwork of houses, narrow streets and small plots, with very little empty space between them.
The Tama River forms the southern edge, a broad band of water with wide grassy banks used for walking, cycling and sports. The Odakyu Line crosses the city, and its stations anchor small shopping areas. Away from the tracks, many streets follow the irregular lines of old field paths and irrigation channels, which produces the winding, fine-grained pattern typical of Tokyo's suburbs.
