Ksar el Boukhari lies in Médéa province, at the point where the Tell Atlas begins to open onto the High Plateaus of Algeria. On the map, the town sits along the main national road running south from Algiers toward the interior, with newer districts spreading across the lower ground and older quarters rising on higher land.
The name refers to the ksar, the fortified old village, that forms the historic heart of the town. Its compact, irregular lanes stand out on the map against the wider, straighter streets of later expansion. The town has long been a stopping point on the route between the coast and the south.
