Lichinga Map Poster
Lichinga is the capital of Niassa, Mozambique's largest and most sparsely populated province, and it sits on a high plateau east of Lake Niassa. The altitude gives it a cooler climate than much of the country. On a map the centre is laid out as a regular grid of wide streets and blocks, a pattern inherited from its colonial foundation.
Under Portuguese rule the town was called Vila Cabral, and it took its current name after independence. Around the planned core, newer neighbourhoods have grown more informally, with streets and paths spreading into surrounding farmland. The town is an administrative and trading centre for a vast region of forests, rivers and small villages, and a main road leads west down toward the lakeshore.
