Luena is the capital of Moxico province in eastern Angola, on a broad plateau covered by savanna and woodland. Moxico is Angola's largest province by area, and Luena is its main city. Known during the colonial period as Vila Luso, the city grew as a stop on the Benguela Railway, which crosses Angola from the Atlantic coast toward the eastern border.
From above, the older part of the city has a planned layout of wide streets and regular blocks, while newer districts extend outward in less formal patterns. The railway runs through the city in a long line, and an airport occupies a large open area. Beyond the urban edge, the plateau stretches out with few roads, broken by river valleys.
