Markova is a settlement on the outskirts of Irkutsk, and in recent years it has grown quickly as the city has expanded outward. From above, the contrast between old and new is easy to see: an older area of detached houses on narrow streets, alongside newer residential districts with larger blocks and wider, more planned roads.
Around the built-up area, the land is still largely forest and open ground, which gives Markova a clear outline on the map. Roads link it towards the city, and the new districts continue to fill in the space between older settlement and the surrounding taiga.
