Montelíbano lies in southern Córdoba, Colombia, on the banks of the San Jorge River. From above, the town's shape follows the river: a compact grid of streets on one side, with the San Jorge sweeping past in a wide, brown line on the map. Beyond the town edge the landscape opens into cattle pasture, wetlands and the first low hills toward the Andes.
The streets are laid out in the regular blocks common to Colombian towns, with a central plaza near the older part of town close to the water. Newer neighbourhoods extend inland in looser patterns. The river is the town's oldest route, and the way the grid lines up along the bank shows how settlement here grew from the water outward.
The area is known for Cerro Matoso, one of the world's major ferronickel mines, which sits a short distance from town.
