Mostaganem stands on a plateau above the Mediterranean in western Algeria, east of Oran across the Gulf of Arzew. The city faces the sea along cliffs and beaches. Its port is tucked below the town, and the main streets run out along the coast and inland towards the plains.
A ravine cuts through the city, separating the historic quarter of Tigditt from the districts laid out later. On a map the old town has narrow, irregular lanes. The colonial-era centre across the ravine is built on a straighter grid of boulevards and blocks, and newer districts extend in every direction beyond it.
