Mutuípe is a small city in the state of Bahia, in the hilly interior of the Jiquiriçá valley region. Its centre is compact and its streets rarely run straight for long. From above they bend with the contours, following the low ground and climbing the slopes, so the plan looks more like a branching leaf than a grid.
Around the urban core the map opens into farmland, with rural roads and tracks linking scattered farms and hamlets across the hills. Small streams cut through the terrain and decide where houses could be built. The town's outline is defined as much by topography as by planning, which is typical of the farming communities in this part of Bahia.
