Pijijiapan lies on the Pacific coastal plain of Chiapas, a long strip of flat land between the Sierra Madre and the sea. The town stands along the coastal highway that runs the length of the state, and from above its streets form a regular grid of blocks around a central plaza, a pattern typical of towns across southern Mexico.
Beyond the grid, the landscape does much of the work. Rivers descend from the mountains toward the coast, pasture and fields cover the plain, and nearer the shore lies a band of lagoons, estuaries and mangroves. The region is a study in transitions, from steep ground to flat land to water, with the town set in between.
