Ploieşti lies on a flat plain in Prahova county, about sixty kilometres north of Bucharest, where the land starts to rise toward the Carpathian foothills. From above the city has a clear radial structure. Main roads converge on a central area, a ring of boulevards encircles the core, and residential districts spread outward in every direction.
The city has been the centre of Romania's oil industry since the nineteenth century. Refineries on the outskirts form large, regular grids of tanks, pipes and service roads, very different from the residential streets. Ploieşti is also known for its clock museum, one of the more unusual collections in the country.
