Pont-à-Mousson owes its name to two defining features: the bridge across the Moselle and the Mousson hill that rises to the southeast, once crowned by a castle. The town lies on both banks of the river between Nancy and Metz, and on a map the Moselle divides it cleanly in two, with bridges stitching the halves together.
In the centre, the Place Duroc forms a triangular square lined with arcaded houses, an unusual shape that stands out clearly from above. Near the river stands the Abbaye des Prémontrés, an eighteenth-century abbey building beside the water. Pont-à-Mousson was also home to a university founded in 1572, which moved to Nancy in the eighteenth century.
Beyond the historic centre, the map shows the working side of the town, including the large foundry site known for ductile iron pipes, as well as railway lines and the navigable Moselle.
