Long straight roads divide the land into large rectangular blocks, filled with farms, walled compounds, olive groves and houses rather than a dense urban grid. Built-up areas cluster along the main roads, with more open ground between them.
The town has grown from a farming area into part of Tripoli's wider metropolitan area as the capital has expanded southward. Tripoli International Airport lies nearby, on the southern approaches to the city, and major roads connect the area to the capital and to towns further inland.
