Ribeira de Frades lies in the Mondego lowlands west of Coimbra, and its map is mostly about land and water. Cultivated plots cover much of the area in long, narrow strips. Irrigation and drainage channels cut straight lines through them, and the houses gather along roads that follow the slightly firmer ground. It is administered jointly with São Martinho do Bispo.
The built-up parts are modest and linear. Houses line a few main roads, and short lanes lead from them into the fields. The pattern is far less dense than the city a few kilometres east. Instead it has a quiet, repeating geometry that comes from generations of farming on a floodplain.
