Roses lies at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses in Catalonia, where the flat Empordà plain meets the hills of the Cap de Creus peninsula. The town follows the shore in a long arc, with a beachfront, a harbour for fishing boats and yachts, and residential streets climbing the slopes behind. To the east the coast turns rocky and breaks up into small coves.
Near the centre of town stands the Ciutadella, a large fortified enclosure with a star-shaped plan and one of the most striking shapes on the map. Inside its walls are the remains of the Greek colony of Rhode and of later medieval buildings. On the headland east of the bay, the ruined Castell de la Trinitat once guarded the approach from the sea.
Beyond the town, the Cap de Creus natural park covers the headland, and a winding road leads to Cala Montjoi, where the restaurant elBulli became famous.
