Rostov Veliky is one of the oldest towns in Russia, first mentioned in the chronicles under the year 862, and it lies on the shore of Lake Nero in Yaroslavl Oblast. On a map the lake dominates: a broad, shallow oval of water, with the town pressed along its edge and streets reaching inland toward the railway and the main road between Moscow and Yaroslavl.
At the centre stands the Rostov Kremlin, the seventeenth-century residence of the metropolitans, whose walls and towers form a clear enclosure a short walk from the lake. Monasteries mark the shoreline further along, notably the Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery to the south-west, so the waterfront reads as a chain of walled compounds rather than a continuous promenade.
The town is a stop on the Golden Ring of historic cities north-east of Moscow and is known for finift, painted enamel miniatures made here since the eighteenth century.
