Rotorua sits on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua, a large, nearly circular lake that fills a volcanic caldera in New Zealand's North Island. From above, the round water is the dominant shape, with Mokoia Island near its centre, and the city spreads out from the shore in a fairly regular grid of streets that gradually loosens into suburbs.
Rotorua is well known for its geothermal activity, and the map shows several open areas linked to it: Kuirau Park near the centre, Government Gardens with the historic Bath House by the lakefront, and the Whakarewarewa geothermal area to the south, closely tied to Te Arawa history. East of the city lies the Whakarewarewa Forest, known for its redwoods and trails.
