Roads then fan out north towards the Belgian border and south towards the woodland. The Scarpe's canalised course cuts a clean line through the town.
The town's name comes from its thermal springs, which have been used since Roman times and still supply a spa. Its best-known monument is the tall baroque tower of the former abbey church. Around the town lies the forest of Saint-Amand-Raismes, part of France's first regional nature park, the Scarpe-Escaut park created in 1968.
