Santa Clarita lies in northern Los Angeles County, filling a set of valleys between the San Gabriel and Santa Susana mountains. From above, it is a mosaic of curving suburban streets, cul-de-sacs and golf courses, split by the dry, braided bed of the Santa Clara River and framed by bare ridges.
The city was incorporated in 1987 from several communities, including Valencia, Newhall, Saugus and Canyon Country, and each still has its own street pattern. A Santa Clarita map poster shows the planned loops of Valencia next to the older, straighter streets of Newhall and the canyon roads to the east.
Interstate 5 and State Route 14 cut across the valley as broad lines. Six Flags Magic Mountain sits near the western edge, and the surrounding hills have served as backdrops for decades of film and television. Many of the valley's canyons are crossed by paseos, trails running under the streets.
