Shenliu is the seat of Anxiang County in northern Hunan, on the low plain north of Dongting Lake near the border with Hubei. The land is flat and full of water. On a map, rivers and channels thread across the area, and long, straight embankments hold them in place and protect the fields and settlements behind them.
The town has a compact core with a fairly regular street pattern, set close to the waterways that have always shaped life here. Around it, the countryside divides into rectangular polders and fish ponds, a finely drawn grid of dykes and channels that is characteristic of the Dongting region.
