Slagelse is one of the oldest market towns in Denmark, set in the farmland of western Zealand. From above, the old centre forms a compact core of narrow streets around St. Michael's Church, with ring roads and newer districts wrapping around it. Beyond them, the map opens into fields, woods and small villages.
A few kilometres to the west lies Trelleborg, one of the Viking-age ring fortresses built around the late tenth century. Its perfectly circular rampart remains visible in the landscape and is a striking geometric shape even on a simple map. Slagelse itself grew as a trading and administrative centre, and today it is a transport hub on the line between Copenhagen and Funen.
