Somerset Island lies in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, in Nunavut. It is large, low and uninhabited, separated from the Boothia Peninsula on the mainland by the narrow Bellot Strait. Lancaster Sound runs along the north, Prince Regent Inlet to the east and Peel Sound to the west.
On a map the island is a broad, blocky mass with a coastline that alternates between long straight stretches and deep inlets. There are no towns or road networks, only the shape of the land and the water around it. A former trading post, Fort Ross, stood at the southern end near Bellot Strait.
