Somma Vesuviana lies on the northern side of the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, east of Naples. The town spreads across the lower slopes of Monte Somma, the ancient caldera rim that curves around Vesuvius. From above, its streets run uphill toward the mountain, while the lower town opens onto the densely built plain that stretches toward Naples.
At the upper end of the town is the Casamale, a medieval quarter still enclosed by stretches of its old walls. Excavations nearby have uncovered a large Roman villa that some scholars have linked to the emperor Augustus, who died in this area. The fertile volcanic soil has long supported vineyards and orchards on the slopes.
