Sovetskaya Gavan’ sits on the coast of Khabarovsk Krai, where the Tatar Strait separates the Russian mainland from Sakhalin. The bay was known in the nineteenth century as Imperatorskaya Gavan, the Imperial Harbour, and was renamed in the Soviet period.
