Stanford University covers a large stretch of land beside Palo Alto, and from above its plan is unusually clear. Palm Drive runs in a straight line from El Camino Real to the Oval, a broad lawn that opens onto the Main Quad. Around this axis, the academic buildings form a pattern of arcaded courtyards, with the rest of the campus spreading out in looser blocks.
Founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their son, the university was laid out on their former stock farm, which is why it is still known as the Farm. Frederick Law Olmsted helped shape the plan. Hoover Tower rises near the Main Quad, and in the foothills to the south the radio telescope known as the Dish is a landmark for walkers.
