Sulmona sits in the Valle Peligna, a high basin in Abruzzo enclosed by mountains, with the Majella and Morrone massifs close by. It is the birthplace of the Roman poet Ovid, whose statue stands in the town. It is also known across Italy for confetti, the sugared almonds made here for weddings and celebrations for centuries.
The historic centre is long and narrow, stretched along Corso Ovidio, the main street that runs the length of the old town. Side streets branch off it in a fine herringbone pattern. Partway along, the medieval aqueduct runs beside the broad market square of Piazza Garibaldi. Beyond the old walls, newer districts spread across the valley floor toward the mountains.
