Tuluá sits in the broad valley of the Cauca River in western Colombia, on the eastern side of the flat valley floor where it begins to lift toward the Central Cordillera. Its centre follows the regular block pattern common to Colombian towns, laid out around a main square, and the grid extends outward in steady rows until it meets farmland.
The Tuluá River runs through the city from the mountains toward the Cauca, and its green, winding course breaks the grid into distinct halves. On a map it is the single strongest line, a soft curve crossing the straight streets, with bridges stitching the two sides together at regular intervals along its length.
Locals often call Tuluá the heart of the Valle, a nod to its central position in the department and its role as a market town for the surrounding sugarcane and farming country.
