Wageningen sits on the north bank of the Nederrijn in Gelderland, at the point where the flat river landscape meets the higher ground of the Veluwe. From above, the town has a clear edge on the south side, where dikes and wide floodplains line the river. To the north and east, the land rises into the wooded slopes of the Wageningse Berg.
The compact historic centre keeps traces of its old fortified layout, with streets gathered inside what was once a moated town. Around it, residential districts spread outward, and to the west the large campus of Wageningen University & Research sits among green space and research grounds. The university is internationally known for agriculture, food and the environment.
Wageningen has a special place in Dutch history: the German surrender in the Netherlands was negotiated at Hotel de Wereld in May 1945, and the town hosts a large Liberation Day festival every year. A Wageningen map poster brings together river, ridge, old town and campus in one balanced frame.
