Wildeshausen lies on the Hunte River in Lower Saxony, south of Oldenburg, within the Wildeshausen Geest nature park. On a map, the historic centre forms a small, rounded knot of streets around the church, with the river passing to one side and newer districts spreading outward in lighter patterns.
The town is one of the oldest in the Oldenburg region, and its brick Alexanderkirche dominates the centre. The surrounding landscape is known for its prehistoric remains, including the Pestrup burial field, one of the largest Bronze and Iron Age grave fields in northwestern Europe, set in heath and woodland just outside town.
