Zhuantang lies in the hilly south of the Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, narrow valleys and terraced fields. In terrain like this, the town cannot spread out evenly. Its streets gather on the flatter ground and follow the valleys. From above, the settlement looks stretched and irregular rather than square.
Roads leave the town by winding along the slopes, making tight curves as they climb and fall. Streams run through the valley bottoms, and around the town a fine pattern of terraces and small plots covers the hillsides. Even at poster scale, the landscape gives the map texture and depth.
