Aksu lies in Kazakhstan's Pavlodar Region, near the Irtysh River in the flat steppe of the country's north-east. Until 1993 it was called Yermak. On a map the town's layout follows Soviet planning: straight avenues, rows of apartment blocks in regular quarters and a clear line between where people live and where industry works.
The town's economy has long depended on large-scale industry. A major ferroalloy plant sits outside the residential area, and a large power station operates in the district as well.
