Alessandria stands on the plain of southern Piedmont, beside the Tanaro River and near its meeting with the Bormida. It was founded in 1168 by the Lombard League as a stronghold against Frederick Barbarossa and named after Pope Alexander III. On a map the old centre is a compact, rounded shape on the right bank, surrounded by boulevards that follow the line of the former walls.
Across the river lies the Cittadella, an eighteenth-century fortress built as a six-pointed star with bastions and moats. It is one of the largest surviving fortresses of its kind in Europe.
