Alwar sits at the foot of the Aravalli range in north-eastern Rajasthan, and the hills shape the entire map. The old city is packed tightly into the space below a steep ridge, where narrow lanes wind between bazaars and courtyards. Above it, the walls of the Bala Quila fort follow the crest of the hill in a long line high over the town.
Below the ridge, the City Palace complex and the cenotaph of Moosi Maharani stand beside a small tank, one of the most recognised views in the city. Newer districts spread across the flatter land beyond the old centre. Their wider roads and more regular blocks make the change from old town to modern city easy to see.
