Amager is the island that carries much of Copenhagen's southeast. It is almost completely flat, and from above it is a patchwork of very different parts. Dense historic streets sit at its northern tip beside the harbour, planned residential grids fill the middle, the runways of Copenhagen Airport line the east coast, and a wide open landscape of reclaimed land stretches along the west.
The northern end includes Christianshavn, laid out in the seventeenth century with canals in the Dutch manner, and the former naval area of Holmen. To the south, the long straight lines of Ørestad follow the metro, while Kalvebod Fælled, a large nature area on reclaimed seabed, stays almost empty.
