Annobón is the most remote part of Equatorial Guinea, a small volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea that lies south of São Tomé and hundreds of kilometres from the rest of the country. Its name comes from the Portuguese for good year. By tradition, Portuguese sailors first sighted it on New Year's Day in the fifteenth century.
The island is roughly oval and rises steeply from the sea to a series of peaks, with a crater lake in the high interior. Most people live in San Antonio de Palé on the northern coast, the main town.
