Apengjiang is a town in the Qianjiang district of south-eastern Chongqing, among the steep, forested ridges of the Wuling mountains. The town shares its name with the river that runs through it, and like many settlements in this terrain it is shaped almost entirely by the valley floor. On a map the built area forms a narrow ribbon between the hills, widening only where the valley allows.
Streets run parallel to the river, with a few crossings linking the two banks and short lanes climbing into the slopes. Newer blocks fill whatever flat land is available, and main roads thread through the valley on their way to larger towns. The result is a linear plan quite unlike a grid, defined by water and gradient rather than by design.
