Ara-dong is a district of Jeju City on Jeju Island, the volcanic island off the southern coast of Korea. It lies south of the old city centre, on the lower slopes that climb gradually toward Hallasan, the dormant volcano at the heart of the island. From above, the district shows a mix of apartment blocks, older low-rise houses and patches of farmland and woodland.
Streams flowing down from Hallasan cut shallow valleys through the area, and roads either follow them or run straight uphill toward the mountain. As the ground rises, the built-up area thins and gives way to fields enclosed by the island's traditional black basalt walls.
