Arima lies in northeastern Trinidad, where the forested slopes of the Northern Range give way to the flatter land to the south. It is one of the island's oldest towns, established as a mission settlement, and it received a royal charter as a borough in 1888.
The town is home to the Santa Rosa First Peoples Community, descendants of the island's Indigenous inhabitants, and its annual Santa Rosa festival is one of the oldest in Trinidad. At the centre stands the Arima Dial, the town clock that serves as its best-known landmark.
