Augusta Map Poster & Print
Augusta lies on the east coast of Sicily, north of Syracuse. Its historic centre occupies a narrow island between two large bays, joined to the mainland by bridges. From above, the old town is a long, regular grid of streets running the length of the island, with the water close on both sides and the newer town spreading across the mainland.
The town was founded in 1232 by Emperor Frederick II, whose Swabian castle still guards the entrance to the island. Much of the centre was rebuilt after the major Sicilian earthquake of 1693, which explains its orderly layout. Today the bay is one of Italy's largest ports, surrounded by industrial installations, and the ancient Greek site of Megara Hyblaea lies nearby.
An Augusta map poster is built around its island. The straight streets of the old town sit between two wide expanses of water, the bridges connect it to the land, and the coastline around the bays gives the composition broad, sweeping curves.

Swabian castle
At the landward end of the island stands Frederick II's castle, a compact fortified shape that marks the entrance to the old town.
Two harbours
Wide bays open on either side of the town, their shores lined with docks and industrial areas that give the map large, clear areas of water.

Firwat Augusta
Eng Kaart, déi eppes bedeit
Augusta has a distinctive shape that few towns share, and people from the town or with family roots in eastern Sicily recognise its island at a glance. It makes a strong, simple poster.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a family name or the year of a visit, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint emphasises the harbours.
